HISTORY

Redevelopment of military museum to go ahead

An artist's impression of the redeveloped DLI Museum

The future of Durham's Durham Light Infantry (DLI) Museum has been hotly contested, culminating in Durham County Council's decision to proceed with its £19.9m redevelopment, despite objections.

Opponents, led by Labour's Kevin Shaw, voiced concerns over the disturbance of veterans' ashes and proposed the site become a memorial garden. Financial questions were also raised by councillor Alison Batey in light of recent budget cuts.

On the flip side, supporters argued the project, partially funded by the government, aims to honour veterans by revitalising the museum, closed since 2016.

The council's decision reflects a challenging balance between preserving history and modern redevelopment, aiming to keep the museum's legacy alive while adapting to current and future community needs.
